Sound and motion working together to free trapped water
Vibration mode plays a deep 80Hz bass tone through the speaker while pulsing your phone's vibration motor at the same time. The combined physical shaking reaches water droplets that pure sound can't move, especially ones wedged at the edge of the speaker chamber.
If your phone was dropped in water, rained on, or taken in the shower, run vibration mode after the standard water eject. It's the most effective follow-up when sound is still crackling or muffled after the first pass.
Don't press the phone against a hard surface — that dampens the vibration. Hold it loosely in your hand or rest it on a soft cloth with the speaker grill facing down, so gravity carries the shaken-out droplets away from the speaker.
When sound cleaning is enough — and when it isn't
Wipe the phone dry, keep it upright with the speaker facing down, and don't plug in a charger until you're sure the port is dry — charging a wet phone is how most water damage actually happens. The rice trick is a myth: rice dries the outside slowly and can leave starch dust in your ports. Run vibration mode and the water eject tone as soon as the outside is dry.
If sound stays distorted after cleaning, moisture may have reached the speaker coil or board. Speaker replacement at a service centre typically runs ₹800–₹3,000; liquid damage to the motherboard can cost far more. Standard manufacturer warranties don't cover liquid damage — the internal indicator sticker reveals it — but mobile insurance and device protection plans usually do, so check any plan you bought with the phone before paying for repair.
IP67 phones survive brief submersion and IP68 goes deeper for longer, but no rating stops water sitting in the open speaker grill — that's why even waterproof phones sound muffled after a swim and still need a water eject. Ratings also weaken as seals age. For pools, beaches and monsoon commutes, a simple waterproof pouch protects any phone better than its rating does.
